The USI Rectorate approved a list of projects to be funded through the "Fondo Istituzionale per la Ricerca" at its sitting on 22 December 2022. Specifically, six grants were awarded to young researchers for projects in architecture, communication and informatics, and to two PhD programmes in architecture and business studies.

The projects were submitted through a public call and selected through a rigorous evaluation process by the USI Research Committee with the support of independent external evaluators. The purpose of the FIR is to foster the strategic development of research by supporting structured projects. The service is funded by a part of the overhead on projects from the Swiss National Science Foundation and by other institutional funds. In addition to annual calls, it supports timely research needs (up to CHF 20,000) and co-funds the USI PhD student mobility programme.

In the words of USI Pro-Rector for Research Prof. Gagliardini, "the selected projects meet two strategic goals for USI. On the one hand, supporting the training of PhD students is a priority for our university, as it contributes to training new research recruits and to positioning USI in international research networks; the creation of structured PhD programmes is an important tool to improve quality and reach a critical mass also by attracting PhD students from outside. On the other hand, the grants awarded will enable promising young researchers to deepen their scientific work and devote themselves more to research and further their careers, with a view also to participation in national and international programmes."

The list of funded projects is available on the FIR web page
